Black and White Photography – black and white photography has always been my preferred choice over colour. I love the emotion that shines through. It focuses more intently on the connection of the subject that colour. But photography is art and that is my interpretation. Many others have different opinions. My Gran always preferred my photos in colour. Her reasoning was that they only had black and white photos. To have colour was something new and exciting for them.
In my Gran’s generation if they wanted a colour photo, they would have to hire someone to paint their image. The painter would have to basically paint the colours over the black and white image. I have a ‘colour’ photo of my Gran and grandpa on their wedding day. It’s framed and hanging in my home. My Gran and I had a special bond and she spent her last 5 years of life living with me and my boys. And although her leaving hit me hard, I knew how happy she would be to be with my grandpa again after being apart for almost 20 years.
My passion is Black and White Photography…
I have been mentoring with Gary Hill since May this year. My photography techniques have come on leaps and bounds. As most of my clients prefer colour over black and white, that’s what I give them. I want my clients to be happy so I give them the style I know they hire me for. And that’s not to say that I don’t like colour images. There are some instances such as particular Newborn images and landscapes, where I don’t think black and white photography would work at all (again personal preference). On the other hand, I think colour always works. Since training with Gary and having a classic black and white/posing day, has ignited my passion for black and white photography again.
After each session, I have a ‘play afternoon’ where I get friends and their children in to do some ‘modelling’ for me. I get to practice lighting patterns, techniques and convert all images to black and white.
